What a HUGE September

All we can say about September is “Wow!!”. September was the biggest delivery month we have had by far, and we are happy to report that we served 55 children this past month.

Our volunteers really came through and we are so grateful and so thankful for all that you did to help us get through this big month. September is one of the biggest birthday months and we definitely got a taste of that.

We thank the following volunteers for making September a success! We appreciate you all so very much!

I learned of Birthday Blessings KC from the United Way of Greater KC Volunteer Opportunity Newsletter.  I actually was trying to find a volunteer opportunity for my young adult son, however, my interest was piqued when I saw the Birthday Blessing need for bakers.

I started baking cakes in junior high because both of my parents worked and I was alone after school and always felt the need to keep busy and be productive. Once I started working, I always looked for a reason to bake…whether it was for my sales teams, a bake sale or even for customers!

My job now affords me the luxury to work from home, however, since I no longer have a local sales team or customers, my baking opportunities are very limited..…there’s only so many cakes/cookies one can make for personal consumption!

My children are both grown but I was a single parent most of their lives.  I remember when money was tight, however, birthdays were always very special to them and I make sure they always had a special cake.  My heart breaks thinking about any child feeling sad because he doesn’t get to celebrate his birthday like “other kids” do.

Being able to share my love of baking with children makes me simply feel good inside.  Baking and cooking is how I show my love.  I selfishly also enjoy the opportunity to improve my decorating skills!

My son has learned that he has to stay out of the cakes/frostings no matter how hungry he is.  My boyfriend has learned that sometimes our dates are precluded by dropping off cakes and balloons at Kelly’s house.  My 3 year-old granddaughter has learned that the pretty cupcakes aren’t always hers.  My sister in St. Louis gets a picture of every cake I make and every child I deliver to with the hope that she will follow through on her plan to start a Birthday Blessings program in St. Louis.

Birthday Blessings KC is my true blessing!

We’re looking forward to seeing what the rest of this year brings as we start to head into the holiday season.
